Fruit Bats

Hide and Go Seek. I know you have all played this game at least once in your life. If not, tell Peter and Mark you want to play after church. Hide and Go Seek is a childhood game. Everyone hides while one person counts to 100. The first person found is “it” next round. Simple. Fun. Exciting.

Now think of the best Hide and Go Seek player you know.
What makes this person so good? Is it because they are fast? Small? Creative?

Now think of the worst player you know.
What makes them so bad? Is the person loud? Slow?

I was trying to answer the same questions about the best and worst players, and I struggled with my answers. I was trying to think about which of my friends would be best, and each of them has qualities that make them good or bad. Then I thought of God.

How good do you think God would be at this game? Remember to keep in mind His qualities: all powerful, immensely creative, and swift like a lion.

If you said amazing, #1, ballin’, or the champion…then you are WRONG! That’s right. You are very wrong. Although God has all the best qualities, He wouldn’t use them.

God would seriously be the worst Hide and Go Seek player. It’s ironic isn’t it? It’s ironic that a God who can do all things is terrible. On the flip side, it’s stinkin’ amazing!!! There is a God who doesn’t want to hide from you.

Read Matthew 7:7-8.

Ask and it shall be given. SEEK and you shall find. We have to go after our God. We have to pursue him. We have to care enough to get off the couch and seek His heart. But why is it so hard to find a God who is unimaginably big?

What do you think?

I think our vision is distorted. When it comes to seeing God, it’s like we were born with blurred vision. Or maybe we aren’t using the right body parts to see.

Fruit bats. A fruit bat is, for all practical purposes, blind. It literally cannot see. So it relies on echolocation and its hearing to fly around. For all intents and purposes, the fruit bat sees with its ears.

We should be like the fruit bat. We should quit trying to see with our eyes. Instead, we should see with our ears.

Read 1 Kings 19:11-13.

God speaks in a gentle whisper. He is quiet. He is subtle. We have to really focus with our ears to hear Him sometimes.

Tonight just be still. Don’t talk to your best friend. Don’t text. Don’t use your eyes tonight. Let’s hear God together and focus on His calling.

Psalm 46:10.
